----------------------------------------------------------------------------

"The AIM Guide to Survival & Success in the Music Business" has been produced by AIM to help anyone who wants to run an independent record company. It’s the only guide written from the record label point of view, most other guides take the point of view of the artist aspiring to a record deal.

The AIM Guide promises to:

  • help everyone in the business (from label to artist and designer to promoter) who needs to understand the parts that make the whole.

  • for the specific needs of the newly established businesses, present a rich introduction to the key issues and terminology as well as provide an indispensable reference source for the specific needs of the more established businesses.

  • refresh your memory on the existing issues which arise from time to time in the course of trading as well as covering in detail the most recent issues facing the ever-evolving and ever-expanding Music Industry.

  • provide an indispensable guide to anyone studying the industry and who intends to work with music.

  • give an accessible insiders’ perspective to anyone who loves to listen to and play music in order to understand the business behind the music.

ABOUT THE AIM GUIDE

The AIM Guide looks at the music business as literally a combination of the two words "music" and "business", defined in the Oxford English Dictionary as:—

Music art of combining sounds with a view to a beauty of form and expression of emotion; sounds so produced.

Business task, duty, thing(s) needing dealing with, buying and selling, trade.

The music industry is a marriage of talent and business. The information provided in the AIM guide sets out to help the reader understand this unusual and exciting coupling by providing essential knowledge and understanding.

Every effort has been made to write the guide in plain English. It is not intended to be an academic textbook. Instead it is a practical working guide providing a bigger and clearer picture, as well as a reminder of specific issues you need to think about on a daily basis.

The AIM guide is structured and subdivided into fifteen sections. These are interrelated and compiled in a logical sequence. The structure of the sections and the sub-sections means that a newcomer can obtain a general overview quickly. More experienced readers can drill down into the sub-sections to obtain all the necessary detail. As the book is designed to be useful to all readers, each section and sub-section is intended to stand on its own. Consequently, you will find that there are many areas that overlap.

The sections can also be approached or referred to in any order, depending on your particular business needs at the time. You will find a table of contents, summarising each section and a full indexed list at the end to help you navigate your way round. Each of these sections is divided into four broad sub-sections (varying in length and scope depending upon their relevance and importance to that particular section). The sub-sections are:

1. MUSIC AND TALENT:

All about the artist, musicians, producers and remixers as well as artistic and creative matters generally and how they affect your business approach.

2. THE MARKETPLACE

All about the music market, including marketing, distribution, selling, advertising, promoting, media and new media, e-commerce, licensing and trading generally.

3. LEGAL AND BUSINESS AFFAIRS

Strictly legal and related issues such as liability, acquisition and protection of rights, contracts and copyright, together with wider issues of negotiations and copyright infringement.

4. BUSINESS AND FINANCIAL

All about money, including financing, royalties, taxes, advances and profit splits. About the format.

We have presented the AIM Guide in a PDF format suitable for Macs and PCs. This user-friendly format will ensure that information can be quickly and easily accessed and navigated. Unlike print publications, it allows you to:

  • customise your experience to suit your specific needs;

  • read it right through or link straight to a particular section;

  • bookmark key sections and surf between the relevant parts;

  • go directly to the exact information you want by using the text search facility.

Throughout the Guide, all references to "See Section X" or "see CIN Chart Rules" (for instance) are linked and appear in bold. Simply click on the emboldened text to go directly to the relevant section or document.
